Police chief said reports from across the country indicated that most areas have remained peaceful

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has assured Kenyans that the country remains safe and secure despite concerns surrounding the June 25 Gen Z anniversary protests.Speaking in Kitengela, Kajiado County, on Thursday, Kanja said the National Police Service was committed to maintaining security across the country while safeguarding constitutional rights.”Our country is safe and secure from the north to the south, east and west,” Kanja said as he addressed concerns over the planned commemorations marking the June 25, 2024 protests.He reiterated that peaceful demonstrations and picketing are protected under the Constitution, provided those involved comply with the law.”Today, we know this is the day that Gen Zs wanted to do the remembrance of what happened on June 25, 2024, and yesterday even our CS came clearly, saying there is no one who is prevented from demonstrating or picketing because it is allowed by the Constitution,” he said.The police chief said reports from across the country indicated that most areas have remained peaceful.”I am happy to report that even in Nairobi town, I have seen Kenyans were peacefully escorted by police. I am happy as the IG because we want a peaceful country for all of us,” Kanja said.He stressed that security is a shared responsibility and called on Kenyans to play their part in maintaining peace and stability.
“We must do whatever it takes to ensure our country remains safe and secure. Right now, I have been going round checking on how we are doing, and I am happy to report that all the areas I have visited are very ok. The reports I am getting from commanders are that everything is running well,” he said.Kanja singled out Kitengela as one of the areas that had remained calm, unlike previous protests that had witnessed unrest.He thanked residents for maintaining peace and going about their daily activities, while also commending police officers and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the area.The Inspector General also defended the roadblocks and arrests carried out in various parts of the country, saying they were based on intelligence reports received by security agencies.According to Kanja, police had information that some individuals intended to travel to Nairobi to cause chaos in the Central Business District.”We can’t allow that to happen because we are aware. That is why we are saying police doesn’t work alone. We work together with other security providers,” he said.The police boss said all actions taken by officers were guided by intelligence and operational assessments.
“Whatever actions you see police taking are due to the available information. If there is any person who has been arrested, the usual procedure must follow by reviewing the available evidence. If the evidence warrants being prosecuted, they will be taken to court. If not, they will be set free,” Kanja said.He concluded by assuring Kenyans that security agencies remained vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens during the June 25 commemorations.
