Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi hospitalised after attack by goons in Kisumu

Siaya Governor James Orengo visits Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in hospital after his attack.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi is nursing injuries following an assault by a group of armed goons in Kisumu County on Wednesday, April 8.

According to Derick Luvega, Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office, Osotsi had made a routine visit to the Acacia area to get a haircut before proceeding to Java restaurant, where he met a friend and also interacted with members of the public.

Shortly after, a group of gun-wielding individuals is said to have confronted him, questioning him over his political allegiance.

Owing to his support for the ‘one-term’ movement as an affiliate of the Linda Mwananchi faction, the goons reportedly assaulted the Senator.

Luvega indicated that Osotsi’s security detail exercised restraint to avoid discharging firearms in public and hurting innocent lives in the process.

“We strongly condemn this barbaric and cowardly act, which appears to have been premeditated and orchestrated,” the statement read in part.

“It is important to emphasise that this isolated incident should not, in any way, be used to tarnish the image of the people of Kisumu, who have consistently demonstrated warmth and hospitality, as evidenced by the Senator’s free movement and interactions prior to the attack.”

Osotsi’s team called on the National Police Service to review the CCTV footage at Java Restaurant to identify and arrest those culpable.

While divulging more details on the matter, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna revealed that the Senator was airlifted to Nairobi for medical assistance.

“The Senator is being airlifted to Nairobi as we speak. Whilst we wait further details, I strongly condemn this attack and ask the police for immediate action on those responsible,” Sifuna posted on X.

Further, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo condemned the incident, noting that ‘political intolerance must be stamped out.

“I have learnt, with much disappointment, of the alleged assault on Vihiga Senator, Hon Geoffrey Osotsi, by some Goons while at a Kisumu Caffee! This act of cowardice, Political intolerance & goonism  must be condemned & stamped-out. If we don’t, 2027 might be ominous!” Amollo posted on X.

The development comes weeks after Osotsi was ousted as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader during the Linda Ground’s National Delegates Convention (NDC).

Opting to hold a parallel meeting, the Linda Mwananchi faction comprising Osotsi, Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Siaya Governor James Orengo called for President William Ruto’s exit in the 2027 polls.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has condemned the brazen attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi at a restaurant in Kisumu.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, the agency said the incident occurred at Java House located at the West End Mall, sending shockwaves among patrons and residents in the lakeside city.

The DCI wished the senator a quick recovery, extending its sympathies to his family and the people of Vihiga County following the incident.

“At this stage, the motive behind the attack has not been established,” the agency said, adding that detectives are actively pursuing critical leads.

Investigators have since launched a probe, with early efforts focusing on forensic analysis of CCTV footage obtained from the scene, which authorities believe could provide key insights into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The agency has called on members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue.

“The DCI is fully committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement added, assuring that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Osotsi, who is nursing injuries following the assault by people his team described as armed goons, has been airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.

According to Derick Luvega, Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office, Osotsi had made a routine visit to the Acacia area to get a haircut before proceeding to Java restaurant, where he met a friend and also interacted with members of the public.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took no prisoners at the memorial service of the late Ol Kalou Member of Parliament David Njuguna Kiaraho, in Nyandarua County.

Taking the lectern on Wednesday, a fiery Gachagua staged a spirited ambush at his former boss, President William Ruto, over his 2024 impeachment, and the politics of betrayal and tribalism. It was the first time the two had publicly addressed each other since his ouster.

Gachagua faulted President Ruto for listening to those he termed as “children”, and whose ill-advice made him lose favour with the Mt. Kenya region.

He singled out Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah for leading the president astray and eventually being rejected by the region.

“They betrayed our community. I told you (President Ruto) before we became enemies, that Ichung’wah and these people will drive you to the pit. I advised you that betrayal is not forgiven among our people. You chose to listen to Kimani Ichung’wah, and now this community has rejected you,” he said.

“Create peace with this community, do not listen to these ‘children’, they are leading you astray.”

He further urged President Ruto to steer clear of labelling the community as tribal, saying that it is willing to work with his government only if he tames those giving him bad advice.

Gachagua added that the political betrayal that led to his ouster cannot erode his prominence in his community, and it will be impossible to dismiss his influence.

“Yes, you removed me from office, but removing me from the hearts of these people is impossible. It is like cutting a Mugumo tree with a razor blade,” he said.

“Tell Ichung’wah that we are going to Kikuyu on Saturday. He has mobilised gangs to harm people, burn houses and destroy businesses. He should stop being foolish.”

He also faulted National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula for not observing Standing Orders and allowing the House to discuss him without the standard procedures.

“Five times you have allowed Parliament to discuss me without a substantive motion. You have let the National Assembly down. You are the Speaker, not a youth winger for UDA,” he said.

“If Kimani Ichung’wah wants to discuss me, let him move a substantive motion in accordance with standing order 51. They keep on talking about me as their kihii (uncircumcised boy).”

Before today’s meeting, Gachagua and President Ruto last met in public on November 16, 2024, at the installation of the Embu Catholic Bishop, shortly after the ex-DP’s impeachment.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has once again moved to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) seeking orders to stop his removal as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

In a fresh application filed under a certificate of urgency, Sifuna wants the tribunal to suspend the implementation of a resolution allegedly passed by ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on February 11, 2026, which sought to oust him from office over claims of misconduct.

Through his lawyers, Sifuna is also seeking to halt any disciplinary proceedings arising from a Notice to Show Cause dated April 2, 2026, and to bar both the party and the Registrar of Political Parties from effecting or publishing any decision removing him in the Kenya Gazette.

He argues that the decision to remove him was reached unlawfully, without prior notice, and without giving him an opportunity to defend himself, in violation of constitutional provisions on fair administrative action and political rights.

According to court documents, Sifuna claims the allegations of misconduct were never tabled as an agenda item during the NEC meeting and that he was neither informed of the accusations nor invited to respond before the decision was made.

The embattled ODM Secretary General further accuses the party of acting in bad faith by initiating what he terms as a “predetermined disciplinary process,” including issuing a notice to show cause while already fixing a hearing date; an indication, he says, that the outcome had already been decided.

He also faults the party for allegedly giving him only four days to respond to vague accusations over the Easter holiday period, arguing that the timeline was unreasonable and designed to undermine his right to a fair hearing.

This latest move comes after the tribunal previously struck out his earlier complaint for lack of jurisdiction, directing the parties to first exhaust the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Mechanisms (IDRM).

However, Sifuna now contends that the party has frustrated that process and rendered it ineffective.

He warns that unless the tribunal intervenes, ODM may proceed with what he terms an unlawful process and formally gazette his removal, an action he says would not only violate the law but also lead to misuse of public resources.

Sifuna is now urging the tribunal to assume jurisdiction and grant interim orders preserving his position pending the hearing and determination of the dispute.

The matter is expected to be mentioned urgently before the PPDT.

The move comes after ODM initiated proceedings to kick him out of office over alleged gross misconduct.

In a show-cause letter issued on April 2 signed by ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Sifuna is accused of publicly contradicting party positions and resolutions.

Among the cited incidents are his appearances on Citizen TV’s The Explainer programme on July 22, 2025, and February 3, 2026, where he allegedly made statements inconsistent with the party’s official stance, including declaring the ODM-UDA broad-based arrangement “dead.”

The party further accused him of persistently issuing contradictory statements despite participating in internal meetings where official positions were agreed upon.

This, Wanga stated, has caused confusion and undermined the party.

He is also accused of initiating and engaging in unsanctioned political activities under the Linda Mwananchi Initiative, which ODM claims were conducted outside the framework of officially approved party programmes.

Additionally, the letter cites his alleged failure to attend key party meetings, including a Central Committee meeting held on January 12, 2026, as well as NEC meetings on February 11 and March 4, 2026.

The party ordered Sifuna to respond to the show cause letter by Wednesday, April 8. He is also required to appear before a disciplinary panel on April 10, 2026, at 10am at a venue to be communicated to explain his version of events.
