Breaking the fast with easily digested foods such as dates is recommended.

As Muslims observe Ramadan, which began on February 17 and will last 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon, maintaining digestive health during iftar is essential.

Heartburn and acid reflux are common complaints after a long day of fasting, particularly when meals are heavy or rushed.

Health experts offer simple steps to reduce discomfort.

Breaking the fast with easily digested foods such as dates is recommended. Dates provide a gentle source of natural sugars and energy without overwhelming the stomach.

After eating dates, taking a 10-minute pause before consuming the main meal allows the digestive system to adjust.

Overeating at iftar can trigger acid reflux, so moderate portions are advised. Deep-fried, oily and fatty foods should be limited, as they tend to relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and increase the risk of heartburn.

Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly also supports smoother digestion.

It is equally important to limit acidic and spicy foods, as well as caffeine and fizzy drinks, which can irritate the stomach lining. Avoid lying down immediately after eating; waiting at least two to three hours before sleeping helps prevent acid from flowing back into the oesophagus.
