Economic Freedom Fighters condemns Israel-US strikes on Iran/BBC

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has issued a statement condemning what it describes as illegal and unjustified military attacks on Iran by Israel in collaboration with the United States, warning that the actions risk escalating into a wider regional war.

In a press release dated Saturday, 28 February 2026, the EFF said the latest strikes, which it claimed took place in Iran’s capital, Tehran, were aimed at senior Iranian government officials and amounted to an attempt to undermine Iran’s sovereignty.

The party characterised the attacks as provocative and contrary to international law, and accused Israel and the United States of acting in concert.

The EFF further alleged that the alliance between Israel and the United States has repeatedly carried out unlawful military actions in the Middle East, arguing that these actions have contributed to rising instability across the region.

It also claimed that similar conduct has been evident in Palestine, where, according to the statement, violence and displacement have occurred as part of efforts to secure Israeli interests, regardless of human cost.

These assertions were presented as the EFF’s view of events.

Turning to the role of Washington, the EFF said the United States had effectively become a proxy for Israeli interests and had entered conflicts without congressional approval.

It argued that this had led to diplomatic and economic pressure being applied to countries that criticise Israel, and claimed that United States foreign policy was shaped primarily in Israel’s interests. These claims were attributed directly to the EFF.

The party also called on South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to immediately evacuate South African citizens currently in Israel and Iran.

The EFF said it believed further attacks on Tehran were imminent and described the absence of a coordinated evacuation effort as irresponsible, given what it termed a predictable escalation towards war.

In the statement, the EFF addressed Israeli citizens directly, arguing that their government had acted as an aggressor and warning that any retaliation by Iran would be a consequence of Israel’s actions.

It attributed responsibility for such outcomes to Israel’s political leadership, using strong language to describe those leaders. The party said Israeli citizens should recognise what it described as the role of their government in provoking conflict.

The EFF also asserted that, in the context of what it described as attempts at regime change and international silence over alleged Israeli actions, Iran, like any other state, had the right to defend itself.

This position was framed as part of a broader call for peace, which the party said should remain a global priority despite rising hostilities.

Additionally, the statement linked the attacks on Iran to what it claimed was the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, alleging that their whereabouts and condition could not be independently confirmed.

The EFF presented this as further evidence, in its view, that the Israel–United States alliance had assumed the authority to remove world leaders without international accountability.

The EFF concluded by reiterating its position that the actions it described constituted war falsely presented as pre-emptive self-defence, and said the situation highlighted what it views as repeated violations of international law.
