SHA is collapsing,’ Gachagua says as he faults Ruto over healthcare, farming woes

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at President William Ruto over claims that the opposition is tarnishing Kenya’s image internationally, insisting the country’s reputation has been damaged by the conduct of the government.

Speaking at ACK Church Kimathi in Ndia, Kirinyaga, Gachagua accused Ruto of neglecting his duties and focusing on early campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election, while key sectors struggle.

“We heard the president say that we in the opposition are spoiling the name of the country. We want to tell him it is not us, it is him,” Gachagua said, as he cited a string of issues he claimed have attracted international criticism, including alleged abductions and killings, and accusations of interference in Sudan’s affairs.

Gachagua also claimed the government was “collapsing”, pointing to challenges in healthcare and agriculture.

“The SHA is collapsing, taking hospitals down with it,” he said, alleging that facilities are under strain. He also claimed farmers have been forced to buy fertiliser from agro-vets due to a lack of subsidised options, saying government promises to support farmers have not been met.

The former deputy president further questioned Ruto’s priorities, accusing him of focusing more on Sudan than addressing problems at home, and urged the President to stop blaming the opposition.

He also took aim at leaders in the Mt Kenya region whom he said were unable to “stand up” to the President, claiming the region’s problems persist because of weak leadership.

Gachagua alleged that illicit alcohol has resurfaced in parts of Mt Kenya since he left government, claiming he had fought the trade while in office but that the current administration has allowed it to return.

He further criticised National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Ndia MP George Kariuki and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, claiming they were being used to undermine Mt Kenya residents. He alleged meetings linked to an impeachment push were held at Kariuki’s Nairobi hotel.

Gachagua used the event to rally support for his party, saying Mt Kenya needs a strong political vehicle and pitching DCP as the answer to the region’s challenges.

He was accompanied by Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu and Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri, among other leaders and aspirant

Two people were killed and 11 others injured after a lorry collided head-on with a matatu at Kapmusa area along the Bomet–Kisii highway, police have said.

Bomet County Traffic Commander Daniel Ololngojine said the lorry, which was travelling from Kaplong towards Bomet town, veered off the road before crashing into a matatu belonging to Quarser Shuttle Company.

The matatu driver and one passenger died on the spot, police said.

Following the crash, seven injured passengers were rushed to Kaplong Mission Hospital, while four others in critical condition were referred to Tenwek Hospital.

Among those injured are a two-year-old and an eight-year-old who sustained fractures and were reported to be in stable condition.

Police said the lorry driver fled the scene and is being sought.

The bodies were taken to Longisa Hospital mortuary, while the wreckage was towed to Bomet Central Police Station for inspection as investigations continue.

Mombasa United maintained their perfect home record with a 3-1 comeback victory over bottom-placed MCF, a result that sends them to the top of the National Super League table.

The hosts recovered from an early setback thanks to goals from James Onyango, Juma Mwajao, and Abdallah Swaleh, overturning MCF’s opener by John Omondi.

MCF got off to a dream start in the 3rd minute when John Omondi scored a stunning long-range effort from the centre circle, catching Mombasa United goalkeeper Kevin Tila off guard.

Just four minutes later, Mombasa United nearly equalised, but Hakimu Msami missed a clear chance from close range, sending his effort just over the bar.

In the 33rd minute, United were awarded a penalty after Wambua Ndolo was penalised for a handball inside the box. Denis Toeri stepped up to take it, but his effort was comfortably saved by MCF goalkeeper Brian Omondi.

Mombasa United eventually found their equaliser in the 44th minute through James Onyango, who capitalised on a loose ball in the six-yard box and fired a low shot past the keeper.

During stoppage time in the first half, United continued to press for a second goal, with attempts from Fidel Omondi, Jackson Watee, and David Mayson, but they were unable to find the target, heading into halftime level.

After the break, Mombasa United returned with renewed intensity, pushing forward in search of a winner, though chances from Jackson Watee and Samuel Atta went begging.

Their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when defender Juma Mwajao gave them the lead with a simple tap-in after Hakimu Msami’s 20-yard shot was parried by goalkeeper Omondi.

In the 78th minute, substitute Abdallah Swaleh sealed the win in style, scoring with his first touch, a powerful 25-yard strike that extended United’s led to 3-1.

MCF introduced substitutes Ezekiel Okare and John Ochieng in an attempt to mount a comeback, but they were unable to break down United’s defence, as the match ended 3-1 at Mombasa Sports Club.

Speaking after the match, Mombasa United head coach Gilbert Selebwa welcomed the result despite his team conceding early.

“The bottom-placed teams are dangerous to play, but we planned the whole week that they would go on a low block, but I’m happy we kept our faith, our game plan, and we managed to get the win,” Gilbert Selebwa.

MCF head coach Francis Chege praised his players’ effort, highlighting their strong start.

“We played well, the first 30 minutes we played like a top team and we scored a goal, which I can say is a goal of the season, but we feel that the referee’s decision is the reason we lost today,” Francis Chege said.

Tottenham parted company with coach Igor Tudor by mutual consent on Sunday after just seven games in charge as they battle to stay in the Premier League.

Tudor lost five of those matches, leaving Spurs out of the Champions League and hovering just one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

The 47-year-old did not appear in front of the media after last weekend’s damaging 3-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest after learning of his father’s death just after the game ended.

“We can confirm that it has been mutually agreed for head coach Igor Tudor to leave the club with immediate effect,” Tottenham said in a statement.

“We also acknowledge the bereavement that Igor has recently suffered and send our support to him and his family at this difficult time.

“An update on a new head coach will be provided in due course.”

Tottenham are not in action again for another two weeks when they travel to Sunderland.

The former Juventus boss was appointed in February following the dismissal of Thomas Frank.

But the Croatian has been powerless to stop Tottenham’s slide towards the relegation trap door for the first time since 1977.

The London club, ravaged by injuries this season, have not won a Premier League match since late December and is out of every cup competition.

Spurs won the Europa League final last year under Ange Postecoglou, ending a 17-year trophy drought, but the Australian was sacked after a 17th-place finish in the Premier League.

Frank arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an impressive track record, and the club started the season with just one defeat in their first seven league games.

But they lost their way and club bosses axed Frank following a run of just two wins in 17 league games.

With the fates of Burnley and Wolves almost certainly sealed, Spurs are battling for survival along with West Ham, currently in the relegation zone, Forest and Leeds.

Relegation to the second-tier Championship would be a seismic event in English football.

Spurs, who play in a gleaming new stadium that holds more than 60,000 fans, are one of the so-called “Big Six” in the Premier League and were ninth in Deloitte’s latest Money League study for the richest clubs in world football.

Just a few years ago, they were Champions League regulars under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, reaching the final in 2019, but their decline has been precipitous.

Spurs have seven matches remaining to save themselves following the international break.

Spain released Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi from their squad on Sunday because of knee discomfort.

“To avoid any risk whatsoever and safeguard the player’s health, he has been released from the squad,” said the Euro 2024 winners in a statement.

“Arsenal’s medical staff have been fully informed of the entire process.”

Zubimendi came on as a substitute in Spain’s 3-0 win over Serbia on Friday.

The 27-year-old will miss Tuesday’s friendly against Egypt in Barcelona.

Zubimendi has been a key part of Premier League leaders Arsenal’s midfield this season, playing 44 times across all competitions.

Kenya’s national sevens side, Shujaa, finally emphatically flipped the script, brushing aside the USA 31–14 in their fourth match of the HSBC Sevens Division 2 leg in São Paulo, Brazil.

Coming into the clash winless against the Americans in their last two meetings in Nairobi and Montevideo, Shujaa arrived with intent and a point to prove, delivering a performance stitched together with grit, speed, and precision.

Captain George Ooro set the tone early, bulldozing through with trademark physicality to score the opening converted try.

The USA responded to level matters, but Shujaa’s spark refused to dim. Rising star David Nyangige pounced on a knock-on advantage, slicing through the defence to restore Kenya’s lead.

The contest briefly tilted when the USA were awarded a penalty try following a high tackle by speedster Patrick Odongo, who was sent to the sin bin.

Yet even with a man down, Shujaa showed resilience. Nyangige returned to haunt the Americans, grabbing his second try after capitalising on defensive lapses and handling errors.

With momentum firmly in Kenya’s favour, Menengai Oilers’ John Okoth scooped up a loose ball and linked brilliantly with Nakuru RFC’s Christant Ojwang, who crossed over for Shujaa’s fourth try, stretching the score to 24–14.

The Americans faltered further, and Ojwang returned the favour moments later, benefiting from Nigel Amaitsa’s clever offload to release Okoth, who sealed the victory with Shujaa’s fifth try.

The result capped a strong run for Shujaa, who had already secured qualification to the championship round following convincing wins over Canada and Germany, despite a narrow loss to Belgium. They now turn their focus to Uruguay in their final fixture of the São Paulo leg at 20:34 EAT.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Lionesses lit up the tournament with a dominant 46–0 demolition of China. Freshia Awuor and Faith Livoi ran riot, scoring four and two tries respectively in a statement performance.

After opening with a loss to Argentina, the Lionesses bounced back with a spirited 24–17 win over Spain and a gritty 14–5 victory over South Africa.

Now sitting atop the São Paulo standings, they head into their final match against hosts Brazil at 22:02 EAT, aiming to secure a top-four finish and a coveted spot in the championship round as they push for promotion.
