Authority said early findings into the cause of accident point to human error

Preliminary investigations into the grisly road accident that claimed 15 lives along the Nyeri–Nyahururu road have pointed to human error, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.
NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa revealed that early findings indicate reckless driving, excessive speeding, and the use of an unroadworthy lorry as the likely causes of the crash.
The accident, which has sent shockwaves across the country, is now the subject of an intensive multi-agency investigation.
“I want to be unequivocal: If these suspicions are confirmed, this was a preventable catastrophe,” Kondiwa said in a statement.
According to the NTSA, investigators are working to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the deadly collision.
Kondiwa noted that the authority will leave no stone unturned in determining whether traffic rules were flouted and whether the vehicles involved met the required safety standards.
“We will scrutinise the roadworthiness of the commercial vehicles involved, the conduct of the drivers, and the adherence to traffic regulations,” he said.
As part of its immediate response, the authority has dispatched a team of experts to the scene to carry out a forensic reconstruction of the crash. The team is expected to gather critical evidence that will help piece together how the accident unfolded.
In addition, NTSA has launched an urgent audit of both the public service vehicle (PSV) operator and the owner of the lorry involved.
The audit aims to verify compliance with safety standards, licensing requirements, and operational procedures.
“We will be conducting an immediate audit of the PSV operator and the owner of the lorry to verify compliance with safety standards and licensing requirements,” Kondiwa stated.
The authority has also announced a major enforcement crackdown along the Nyeri–Nyahururu corridor and other key highways across the country.
The move is intended to weed out unroadworthy vehicles, particularly commercial trucks and PSVs, which have frequently been implicated in fatal accidents.
“We are ramping up enforcement along the Nyeri–Nyahururu corridor and other major highways to remove unroadworthy vehicles from our roads,” Kondiwa said.
He further extended heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims, describing the tragedy as a profound loss to the nation.
“On behalf of the National Transport and Safety Authority, and my own behalf, I extend my most sincere and profound condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims. This is a heartbreaking loss, and we share in the pain of those who have lost their loved ones,” he said.
Kondiwa added that NTSA is working closely with hospitals and emergency responders to ensure that the deceased are treated with dignity and that survivors receive urgent medical attention.
The NTSA boss also issued a stern warning to motorists, particularly commercial drivers, urging them to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
“Recklessness on our roads is not a mistake; it is a choice that has deadly consequences,” he said. “We will ensure that any individual or entity found to have contributed to this tragedy through negligence or violation of traffic laws is held fully accountable.”
Further updates on the investigation are expected to be released as more details emerge.

A tragic road accident along the Nyeri–Nyahururu road has claimed 15 lives, authorities have confirmed.
The crash involved a Nissan matatu and a truck ferrying logs.
Central Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati said the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“15 people died on the spot, while others were taken to hospitals,” he said.
Police reports indicate the lorry swerved to avoid cyclists, causing the collision. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Initial reports had suggested 10 fatalities, but authorities later confirmed the death toll had risen to 15. Emergency responders were deployed immediately to assist the victims and secure the scene.
The accident comes as the country continues to battle high numbers of road traffic incidents. Earlier, seven people died in separate accidents, including four pedestrians, two riders, and a pedal cyclist. At least 14 others sustained serious injuries and were admitted to various hospitals.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to heavy traffic and pedestrian activity.
President William Ruto sent a message of condolence following the road accident.
In a press statement, the President expressed sympathy with those affected, saying: “Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County.”
The statement also acknowledged those injured in the incident, with the President adding: “We pray for the swift recovery of those injured.”
Ruto said the national government is working with the Nyeri County administration to respond to the situation.
“The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support during this difficult time,” he said.
He concluded the message with a brief expression of sympathy: “Pole sana.”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua described the crash as a “difficult moment for our nation and the several families tonight.”
He called for greater care and caution on the roads and urged authorities to ensure road safety measures were accessible to every user. “One life lost is one too many. May the Almighty God rest the souls of our faithful departed in eternal peace,” he said.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas prone to heavy traffic and pedestrian activity. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with further details expected in the coming days.

Mombasa gears up for high-stakes Linda Mwananchi rally
Political pundits have described the rally as a litmus test to gauge Linda Mwananchi’s popularity in the Coast region.

Organisers of the Linda Mwananchi rally in Mombasa have assured supporters of adequate security ahead of today’s event at Tononoka Grounds.
Previous rallies by the ODM splinter group, led by embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, have been marred by chaos and ended prematurely, in disarray.
Moses Aran, one of the event organisers, on Saturday led supporters to inspect the venue.
Political pundits have described the rally as a litmus test to gauge Linda Mwananchi’s popularity in the Coast region, long considered an ODM stronghold for over two decades.
The planned rally comes barely a month after the ODM Linda Ground faction, led by Party Leader Oburu Oginga, held a separate gathering at the same venue.
Aran claimed the country is heading in the wrong direction and the group is determined to champion the interests of ordinary citizens rather than pursue a self-serving political agenda.
“We are not here to rubber-stamp decisions; we are here to ensure wananchi are defended and that Kenya upholds the rule of law. I want to assure you that everything is set,” said Aran.
“It is good to give credit where it is due. We have received support from the security team and have permission to hold the rally,” he added, noting that security leadership from the OCS to the County Police Commander had been notified and were cooperating with the organisers.
He urged supporters from across the Coast region to turn up in large numbers, adding that the rally will begin with a church service at a venue to be announced.
“Do not cower; we cannot be intimidated. At this stage, the only intimidation we accept is from the public. We are ready to stand firm for wananchi and will not watch the country take the wrong direction,” Aran stated.
Another organiser of the rally, Edwin Shamir, criticised what he termed the selective application of democracy, warning that it risks eroding gains made under the 2010 Constitution.
“We want everyone to enjoy freedom of expression without teargas or interference from the government or hired goons. We are calling for a peaceful rally in Mombasa,” said Shamir, urging police to remain impartial.
On his part, Mombasa youth leader Ali Kubo cautioned politicians against intimidating Linda Mwananchi leaders, saying the rally is open to all people regardless of background.
Former Mombasa Woman Representative Asha Mohamed said the movement is ready to champion liberation both nationally and within the county, citing concerns over human rights abuses.
She called on women to turn out in large numbers, emphasising their critical role in the movement.
Human rights defender Bradley Ouna said police have been duly notified and expressed hope for maximum security. “If teargas is used, I will stand firm and shield others,” he said.
John Gichana, a regular attendee of Linda Mwananchi rallies, appealed to police to refrain from using teargas, assuring that participants will remain peaceful and law-abiding.

Israel’s military has confirmed it killed Ali Shoeib in a strike, but accuses him of being a Hezbollah-operative posing as a journalist.

Three Lebanese journalists have been killed in a targeted Israeli strike on their media car in southern Lebanon, local media is reporting.
Ali Shoeib, reporter for Al Manar TV – a network operated by militant group Hezbollah – and Al Mayadin reporters Fatima and Mohamed Fetoni were killed in an air strike in the town of Jezzine.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack as a “blatant crime” that violates international law under which journalists should be protected during war.
Israel’s military has confirmed it killed Ali Shoeib in a strike, but accuses him of being a Hezbollah-operative posing as a journalist.
This is the second time Israel has been accused of targeting journalists in Lebanon since the war broke out.
Last week, Mohammad Sherri – a prominent presenter at Al Manar TV – and his wife were killed in a targeted strike.
So far, more than 1100 civilians, including 120 Children and 42 paramedics, have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.
Many in Lebanon are worried that Israel is using similar tactics which it has been accused of deploying in Gaza – including the deliberate targeting of civilians, journalists and paramedics, which Israel has denied.
A clinic located close to the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab county – which was hit on the first day of the war – has been attacked, an Iranian official has said.
The Political, Security, and Social Deputy Governor Ahmad Nafisi, of the southern Hormozgan province, says the attack caused “damage to the storage facilities” at the Martyr Absalan Clinic.
Iran’s Fars News Agency, which is affiliated to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), cites Nafisi as saying the US and Israel used “several drones” in the attack on the medical complex.
“Fortunately, this attack did not lead to any casualties,” he says, adding an investigation into the extent of the attack is under way.
The area had been evacuated following the fatal strike on the primary school on 28 February – when the US and Israel launched their offensive against Iran. Iranian officials say the attack on the school involved two missile strikes in quick succession, killing at least 168 people, including about 110 children.
US media have reported that American military investigators believe its own forces were likely responsible for hitting the school unintentionally, while US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the matter is being investigated.
Nafisi adds: “Today the whole world knows that the area targeted by the enemy is by no means military, yet we are once again witnessing an attack on this area, which clearly proves the deliberate nature of the attack on Shajareh Tayebeh School in Minab and the killing of 168 pupils and teachers.”
