Mt. Kenya set to hold over 7 million votes in 2027 as IEBC ramps up registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has registered an additional 344,316 new voters in its ongoing enhanced continuous voter registration exercise, pushing the total number of new voters enlisted since September 29, 2025, to over 600,000.
Projections by the electoral body show the Mt. Kenya region could emerge with the largest share of votes in the 2027 General Election, with more than 7 million voters, accounting for over 25 percent of the national voter roll.
The region played a decisive role in the 2022 elections, voting overwhelmingly for President William Samoei Ruto in one of the country’s most competitive presidential races.
Over the years, Mt. Kenya has remained a key voting bloc, producing three of Kenya’s five presidents, including Jomo Kenyatta, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Mwai Kibaki.
In the 2022 polls, President Ruto secured 7,176,141 votes nationally, with approximately 2.9 million votes coming from the region’s ten counties, representing about 41 percent of his total vote. The region recorded a voter turnout of 3.9 million, translating to 67 percent.
“Nyinyi ndiyo mlifanya president na watu wanataka kutukosanisha,” said President Ruto.
The IEBC is targeting to register 6.3 million new voters by 2027, with about 1.7 million expected to come from the Mt. Kenya region, representing nearly 27 percent of the total target.
Kiambu is projected to lead in new registrations with 363,000 voters, followed by Nakuru at 300,000, while Murang’a is expected to contribute 177,000 new voters.
If the targets are met, the region’s total registered voters could rise to about 7.4 million by 2027, contributing to an ambitious national voter roll target of 28 million.
The growing influence of the region appears to have informed recent political realignments, with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua closing ranks in a show of unity against President Ruto.
“I’m not vying for any political seat, the way you vote I will be in Ichaweri I don’t have a problem, but if you make a mistake, it will be up to you,” said Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Ruto thought he was one of us, he is not, he should forget the mountain,” said Rigathi Gachagua.
President Ruto and his Deputy Kithure Kindiki have also intensified their outreach in the region, seeking to consolidate support ahead of the next election.
“Kwani mnadhani kuna mtu anaweza kunitisha? Ati anataka kunikosanishha na watu wa Nyeri. Hawa nitapambana na wao hapa mbele. Kama kuna mtu anafikiria atapiga kelele kuniwachanisha na nyinyi, nyinyi mlifanya rais. Kwani mimi ni wazimu,” said President Ruto.
“We will humble you just like we did in the Mbeere North by-elections. You will not allow to intimidate and blackmail elected leaders through insults and threats of making them unelectable. You found us in politics, you cannot teach us anything,” said Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, the Mt. Kenya region is expected to remain at the centre of political contestation, with intensified competition for its vote.
This comes as the IEBC continues to make progress in its voter registration drive, revealing that in just four days it registered 344,316 new voters, alongside 18,610 transfers and 329 updates of voter details.
The commission has now registered a total of 617,814 new voters since the exercise began on September 29, 2025.

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has appointed the widow of the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, Naiyanoi Ntutu Ng’eno, to the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) board.
According to a gazette notice dated April 2, Naiyanoi was appointed as the ICTA board member for three years, effective immediately.
Following the announcement, ICTA Board Chairperson Lily Ng’ok Kirui took to her social media to express confidence in Naiyanoi’s ability to deliver in the said position.
“Welcome to the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) Board Mrs. Naiyanoi Ntutu Ng’eno,” wrote Ms. Kirui.
“I am looking forward to working closely with you. I have no doubt in your abilities and the contribution you will make to the team. Together, we will fulfil our collective mandate.”
The late MP’s widow came into the limelight following his tragic death in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026, alongside five others.
She was endorsed to contest for the Emurua Dikirr Parliamentary seat left vacant by her later husband but she turned down the opportunity.

An earthquake that struck Afghanistan overnight killed eight members of the same family in Kabul province, the health ministry said on Saturday.
The 5.8-magnitude quake struck at 8.42 pm (1612 GMT) on Friday at a depth of 186 kilometres (115 miles) at the epicentre in northeastern Badakhshan province, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Shaking was felt in multiple parts of the country, including the capital Kabul, according to AFP journalists.
“In the Gosfand Dara area of Kabul Province, eight members of a family died as a result of the earthquake,” Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said in a message to media.
He added that a child aged around two years old was the only survivor from the household and the country’s disaster management agency said the boy had been injured in the tremor.
Afghanistan is frequently jolted by earthquakes, particularly along the Hindu Kush mountain range near where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet.
In August, a shallow magnitude 6 earthquake wiped out mountainside villages and killed more than 2,200 people in eastern Afghanistan, making it the deadliest tremor in the country’s recent history.

The four Artemis astronauts have passed the halfway point between Earth and the Moon on the way to their planned lunar flyby, NASA said on Friday evening.
“You are now closer to the moon than you are to us on Earth,” mission control told the astronauts at around 11 pm (0400 GMT), according to the space agency’s official live broadcast.
“We all kind of had a collective, I guess, expression of joy at that… We can see the Moon out of the docking hatch right now, it is a beautiful sight,” said astronaut Christina Koch replied.
The milestone was hit around two days, five hours and 24 minutes after liftoff, according to the NASA official broadcast.
The US space agency’s online dashboard showed that the Orion spacecraft carrying the astronauts is now more than 219,000 kilometres (136,080 miles) from Earth.
“We’re halfway there,” NASA posted on social media.
The spacecraft’s next milestone will be entering the lunar sphere of influence, set to take place on day five of the flight, according to NASA.
The astronauts — Americans Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman and Canadian Jeremy Hansen — are now on a “free-return” trajectory, which uses the Moon’s gravity to slingshot around it before heading back towards Earth without propulsion.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga will miss the remainder of the 2025–26 season after undergoing surgery for a pelvic injury, his club Al-Arabi SC has confirmed.
In a medical update, Al-Arabi stated that the striker sustained the injury and underwent successful surgery in Paris, France.
His club, Al Arabi, confirmed that Olunga has undergone surgery.
“Our player, Michael Olunga, suffered a pelvic injury and underwent successful surgery this morning in Paris, France,” the club’s medical report stated.
The club added that Olunga will be sidelined for eight weeks and will follow a rehabilitation program under the supervision of the team’s medical staff.
“The player is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks, during which he will follow a rehabilitation program under the supervision of the club’s medical team.”
The injury effectively rules him out for the rest of the season in the Qatar Stars League. Olunga joined Al-Arabi in July 2025 on a two-year deal and has been a regular starter.
This season, he made 14 league appearances, scoring six goals and providing one assist.
In the QSL Cup, he scored two goals in two matches. Across all domestic competitions, he recorded about nine goals before the injury.
Although his goal return is lower than during his time at Al-Duhail SC, he remains an important player for Al-Arabi.
His absence is a setback for both club and country as he begins his recovery.
