Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates reported coming under fresh attacks on Monday morning, with explosions and sirens sounding over the oil-rich Gulf.

The Saudi Ministry of Defense said it had detected two incoming ballistic missiles targeting the capital on Monday, “one of which was intercepted and the other fell in an uninhabited area”.

The UAE defence ministry said it was “currently responding to incoming missile and drone threats from Iran”, explaining “the sounds heard are the result of the Air Defence Systems intercepting missiles and drones”.

Hours earlier, Abu Dhabi authorities reported an Indian national had been wounded by falling debris from an intercepted ballistic missile.

And sirens were sounding in Bahrain, with residents instructed to seek shelter.

“Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place,” the interior ministry posted on social media.

Gulf nations that have long billed themselves as oases of safety and stability in the region have been drawn into the Middle East war as Iran retaliates against US-Israeli strikes.

The Islamic republic has taken aim at US assets as well as civilian infrastructure, including landmarks, airports, ports and oil facilities around the Gulf.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out of the Miami Open in the third round after a surprise 6-3 5-7 6-4 defeat by Sebastian Korda.

Top seed Alcaraz, 22, produced a sloppy first set which gave the American the early initiative but Korda looked to have blown his chance in the second set.

Korda served for the match at 5-4 but was broken to love by the Spaniard who went on to win the next two games to force a third set.

Alcaraz upped the ante but Korda held his nerve and seized a break for 4-3 in the third when his opponent stroked a forehand wide.

Korda, ranked 36th in the world, confidently held his next two service games to close out the match – sealing the win on his second match point as Alcaraz overhit a a return.

Alcaraz said his game is improving despite being knocked out as he prepares to rest up before the clay-court seaon.

“I think the process has been good. Besides the loss today, I think I’m still in the right way,” he said.

“Some things in previous tournaments that I just didn’t feel comfortable, I think in this tournament, I started to feel better and better.”

Alcaraz said lower-ranked opponents such as Korda have the opportunity to play with more freedom against him, but he must guard against putting undue pressure on himself.

He added: “I’m feeling they have more to win than to lose in those matches. They’re playing without pressure.

“I’m not thinking about my pressure. I don’t feel it at all. I’m trying to play my best.”

Korda, 25, is the lowest-ranked man to defeat Alcaraz since world number 55 David Goffin of Belgium upset the Spaniard in the second round in Miami last year

Alcaraz began the year by winning his seventh Grand Slam title with a triumph at the Australian Open and did not suffer his first loss of the season until he fell to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of Indian Wells.

Korda, who reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open in 2021 and 2025 but has never gone further, will face 14th seed Karen Khachanov or qualifier Martin Landaluce in the fourth round.

“It feels great,” said Korda, who wrapped up the win in two hours and 19 minutes as he beat a top-ranked player for the first time in his career.

“I took the scenic route, that’s for sure – a little more stress than I would want but happy with how I played.

“I kept believing. I got myself in some nasty situations, but I kept going and played really well in the end.”

Rybakina cruises into last 16

Meanwhile, third seed Elena Rybakina cruised into the last 16 of the women’s singles with 6-3 6-4 victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

The Russia-born Kazakhstani will play Australian qualifier Talia Gibson, who knocked off another seeded player with a 6-2 6-2 win over 18th seed Iva Jovic.

Gibson, coming off an impressive run to the Indian Wells quarter-finals, had beaten former world number one Naomi Osaka in the second round.

Arteta jumps to the defence of goalie Kepa after League Cup final blunder

Arteta jumps to the defence of goalie Kepa after League Cup final blunder

Mikel Arteta defended his decision to select Kepa Arrizabalaga in the League Cup final after the Arsenal goalkeeper’s costly mistake sparked a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday.

Kepa was guilty of a horrendous blunder in the second half at Wembley when he let Rayan Cherki’s cross slip through his fingers, gifting Nico O’Reilly the chance to head in City’s opener.

Arsenal never recovered and O’Reilly struck again four minutes later to leave the Gunners still waiting for their first major trophy since 2020.

Arteta had opted to keep faith with Kepa instead of picking first-choice stopper David Raya because the former Chelsea star has been a regular in the League Cup this season.

The gamble backfired as Kepa endured another League Cup final moment to forget after his 2019 refusal to be substituted by Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri prior to a penalty shoot-out defeat against Manchester City in which he failed to save a kick.

Kepa also missed a penalty in a shoot-out loss to Liverpool three years later.

Asked about the criticism of his decision, Arteta said: “I understand but I have to do what is right and fair.

“Kepa had played all the competition, I think it would have been unfair to him and the team to do something different.

“He had gone all the way through this competition. Errors are part of football and unfortunately it happened today at a crucial moment.”

Sitting nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, Arsenal were favoured to beat City but they failed to rise to the occasion.

Far too conservative for long periods at Wembley, Arsenal remain without a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup after their quadruple bid came to a painful end.

“Very sad, very hard one to take. We know how much it means and how much we wanted it. The fact we haven’t delivered that is disappointing and leaves a bad taste,” Arteta said.

“First half we were the better team and had the biggest chance of the game, if we scored that it would have changed the game.

“In the first 20 minutes of the second half we weren’t at our best. We struggled to get out of our block and conceded the goal in an unexpected manner obviously.

“You have to give credit to the opposition. They raised their level and capitalised on their moments. We didn’t.”

A plane and an official vehicle collided on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, authorities said early Monday, forcing a halt to flights at the transport hub.

The New York police department told AFP that an Air Canada plane “collided with a port authority vehicle”.

Separately, the fire department said it had “responded to a reported incident involving a plane and vehicle” on runway four.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for the airport, saying there was a “high” likelihood it would be extended.

Authorities did not immediately provide details of the incident, including on casualties.

AFP has contacted the port authority and Air Canada for comment.

Flight tracking platform FlightRadar24 said an Air Canada Express plane had “collided with an airport rescue and firefighting vehicle” while landing.

The aircraft, a CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional partner, had departed from Montreal, the platform said.

It “was rolling down the runway when it struck” the vehicle as it crossed its path, according to FlightRadar24.

Unverified social media images showed an Air Canada aircraft with a badly damaged nose and cockpit area apparently on a runway at night, with emergency vehicles nearby.

New York’s emergency management authority warned people to “expect cancellations, road closures, traffic delays & emergency personnel” near the major transport hub in the borough of Queens.

“Use alternate routes,” it said on X.

All departing flights from LaGuardia had been either delayed or canceled as of early Monday, the airport’s website showed.

AFP has also contacted the airport and the port authority police department for comment.

LaGuardia had already been suffering from flight disruptions due to poor weather, the airport said Sunday on X.

Passengers were also waiting longer to pass security due to “staffing impacts” from a federal funding lapse, it said last week.
