The whereabouts of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju are yet to be known after he was reported missing on Saturday.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says it has launched investigations into the reported disappearance of Tuju, following a missing person report lodged by his family at Karen Police Station on Sunday, March 22.

According to the family, Tuju went missing on Saturday, alongside his driver, as they were on their way to a radio interview. His vehicle is reported to have been abandoned along Miotoni Lane in Karen and was found with its hazard lights on.

“A security guard from a nearby institution alerted authorities, prompting a swift response by officers from Karen Police Station,” the DCI reports.

The DCI says a probe into the mysterious disappearance has begun, urging the family to cooperate with relevant authorities.

According to investigators, Tuju’s family on Sunday denied them access to the former minister’s home along Mwitu Drive in Karen.

“We urge full cooperation from all parties, including unrestricted access to relevant locations and prompt provision of information, for a swift and thorough resolution,” said DCI in a statement on Sunday evening.

Investigators have also urged members of the public with relevant information to report it or share it confidentially through DCI hotlines.

Detectives seek information from people who may have seen him, his vehicle, or any suspicious activity in the Miotoni Lane or greater Karen area before, on or after March 21, 2026.

At the time of the said disappearance, the former minister was facing a court battle over the ownership of Dari Business Park in Karen.

The dispute involves an alleged failure to repay a Ksh.1.9 billion loan borrowed from the East African Development Bank (EADB) in 2015. The initial borrowed amount was USD 9,197,084 (Ksh. 1.2 billion), and the remainder accrued interest.

The properties include Entim Sidai Wellness Sanctuary of LR No.11320/3, Off Tree Lane, Karen, and Tamarind Karen and Dari Business Park, off Ngong, Karen of LR No. 1055/165.

On March 19, Tuju wrote to Inspector General Douglas Kanja protesting what he describes as an unlawful police occupation of Dari Business Park.

In a letter, Tuju claimed that more than 100 police officers raided the premises in the early hours of March 13 without a court order and have remained stationed there for nearly a week.

Torrential storms that have triggered flash floods in Kenya have killed at least 81 people this month, authorities said Sunday, as rain continued to pound much of the country.

“The cumulative number of fatalities has unfortunately risen to 81,” national police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga said in a statement.

“Additionally, flash floods have swept through several areas, displacing approximately 2,690 families and causing widespread destruction of infrastructure and property.”

The capital Nairobi is the hardest-hit region, with 37 people killed, he said.

On Friday night, authorities called on residents to evacuate several slum neighbourhoods downstream from the Nairobi dam, warning of an imminent risk of flooding as rising water levels threatened to breach the dam embankment, according to local media.

The dam has held so far.

Two people drowned overnight in floods in the town of Kiambu, just outside the capital, police told AFP.

Two also died as landslides hit the western village of Kasaka, burying numerous homes.

The rain is forecast to continue until Tuesday.

Authorities called for “extreme caution”.

The March rains have repeatedly turned Nairobi streets to raging rivers, flooding thousands of homes and businesses.

Critics have called for the resignation of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who had vowed to improve the capital’s drainage and road infrastructure when he took office in 2022.

Scientists say human-caused climate change is increasing the probability, length and severity of extreme weather events.

Studies indicate east Africa has been hit by more extreme rains and droughts over the past two decades.

Two people died on Sunday evening and three others were injured after a lorry transporting bricks rammed into a shop at Kawa Shopping Centre in Migori County.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control of the lorry, which was heading towards Isebania and accelerated uncontrollably. It then hit a perimeter wall and crashed into the shop.

This marks the sixth accident at the small shopping centre, with eight cumulative fatalities since the bypass was commissioned for use.

Traders in the area are now calling for the bypass to be redesigned and properly marked to reduce accidents.

The road is currently experiencing heavy traffic due to the diversion of vehicles from Migori Bridge, which is under maintenance.

Drivers of heavy commercial vehicles have been urged to exercise caution when approaching the junction, which has become a notorious black spot, especially during the rainy season when roads are slippery.

Caleb Opondi, the County Executive Committee member for Public  Health and Medical Services, confirmed the incident. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the county referral morgue, while the injured were rushed to the facility’s emergency care wing for treatment.

Residents living downstream of the Nairobi Dam have been put on high alert over an imminent flood risk due to rising water levels.

The Water Resources Authority has issued a precautionary notice urging hundreds of residents who are at risk to relocate immediately.

The water levels at the Nairobi Dam continue to rise dangerously following the heavy rainfall that has been experienced in Nairobi and other parts of the country in the recent past.

Hundreds of residents living or working downstream of the dam are staring at an imminent disaster, a situation that has seen the Water Resources Authority issue a warning urging those at risk to move to safer grounds.

Areas identified as at risk include Kibera, parts of Highrise, Lang’ata, South C, Mbagathi Way, and Madaraka.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja joined the Authority in calling for relocation to avert crisis.

“We must make tough decisions and those decisions are for us. My brothers from Kibra, you know what happens along Ngong River. Right now, I am worried; I received a notice about Nairobi Dam. It started in 1953 and if it was to burst today, we would lose so many lives…there are people who must move,” Sakaja stated.

Governor Sakaja cautioned politicians against politicizing the warnings, even as the nationwide flood death toll climbs to 83.

“If you look at parts of the programmes that we are doing, we are doing the Nairobi Regeneration Program … which opens up the river well. We are telling people to leave riparian land. A project of Ksh.50B… we recently opened Kamukunji Park and the things we are doing we must do as a generation,” said Sakaja.

And even as this situation unfolds in Nairobi, the impact of the ongoing heavy rains is already being felt in different parts of the country.

In Baringo County, a landslide has claimed two lives in Kasaka and Kabarkebo villages in Baringo North.

It is reported that a woman died following the landslides while a four-year-old child was swept away by floods, the two deaths pushing the numbers to 83 countrywide.

“We heard it around 2:30 am; we heard a roar and wondered if it was an earthquake,” says Elvis Lagat, a resident of Baringo County.

“We lost an ECD teacher; she had a child but we managed to save the child. The public helped us,” added Symon Kiplagat, MCA, Kabartonjo Ward

And as the rains continue, residents who are living along flood-prone areas have been urged to be extra vigilant.

“That side has affected four houses below, and in Kakoiywa and Kipsarama, the road is impassable,” said Joseph Makilap, MP Baringo North

“At night it is difficult to know where disaster might strike, so I ask all those in danger zones to move to safe areas,” added Robert Odongo, Sub-County Commander, Baringo North

The Kenya Meteorological Department says heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours is expected to continue until Tuesday across several parts of the country.
