President William Ruto has hit back at religious leaders who criticised his recent remarks and conduct, urging them not to allow politicians to turn churches into arenas for political battles.
Speaking in Yala on Saturday, the President accused opposition figures of using church platforms to spread insults, hate and divisive politics.
A war of words between President Ruto and opposition leaders has escalated in recent days, with sharp public exchanges drawing the attention of the church. Religious leaders have condemned the rising lack of decorum.
The President and his allies are however shifting the blame back to the pulpit, accusing some churches of enabling toxic political rhetoric.
“Mimi naheshimu sana viongozi wetu wa dini lakini msikubali majukwaa, madhabahu, kanisa itumike kwa matusi…kwa kuendesha fitina na ukabila na chuki kati ya Wakenya…sisi tunaelewana jameni? wale wanatutukana kwa kanisa tunawaambia punguzeni mambo yenu,” said Ruto.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah on his part said: “We as leaders we are more embarrassed that our archbishops can preside over trading of insults in churches and in altars of our churches.”
Minority Leader Junet Mohamed added: “Tutoe matusi kwa kanisa tukutane kwa kiwanja, sisi hatuwezi enda kwa kanisa kutusi watu…sisi tunangoja wewe hapa kwa soko tutakumbusha wewe…”
At a separate event in Bureti, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot also slammed the clergy for alleged selective criticism.
“You the church who are telling the President to keep quiet, for three years these people have been insulting the President, where have you been?” Cheruiyot posed.
The President also accused the opposition of lacking a clear agenda, saying they have instead resorted to personal attacks during rallies, adding that he will not hesitate to respond.
“Mara wananiita mwizi, wananitta muuwaji…sasa juzi nikawaambia wacheni matusi walisema hawana agenda, hawana sera,” said Ruto.
Politics along party lines also took centre stage, with ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga warning the opposition against interfering in the party’s affairs, even as MPs signaled a bruising showdown with the Linda Mwananchi faction within the party.
“Na uwachene na chama ya ODM kabisa, wewe endelea na chama chako ya Kijiji,” said Wanga, the Homa Bay Governor.
Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi said: “Let me say here we are going to elect a new Governor of Siaya.”
Earlier, the President launched an affordable housing project in Yala to be built at a cost of Ksh.800 million

The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) has strongly condemned the violent attack on two journalists who were assaulted while on duty covering a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County, on Friday.
The journalists, Gilbert Sitati of Standard Group and George Njoroge of Mediamax, were set upon reportedly in connection with their coverage of a controversial fake ambulance procurement deal linked to Harambee House.
KEG President Zubeidah Kananu described the incident as a brazen affront to media freedom and the public’s right to information.
“Any attempt to intimidate, harass, or harm journalists for executing this duty undermines democratic principles and erodes accountability,” Kananu said in a statement issued on Saturday, adding that it was deeply concerned by the growing trend of hostility and violence directed at journalists, particularly in politically charged environments.
The guild called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to immediately launch thorough and transparent investigations into the attack, demanding that those responsible — including individuals who sanctioned or enabled the assault — be identified and prosecuted.
“Accountability must not stop at the foot soldiers,” the KEG boss warned.
She further urged political leaders and their aides linked to the case to cooperate fully with investigators, stressing that political spaces must not become zones of lawlessness where the press is targeted with impunity.
Kananu also warned that should State agencies fail to act decisively and promptly, it would institute private prosecution against individuals linked to the attack.
Members of the public, witnesses, and media practitioners were encouraged to document and report any incidents of intimidation or violence against journalists to the authorities or to KEG directly.

US actor Nicholas Brendon, known for his role in the hit series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died, his family announced Friday. He was 54.
Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes, the family said in a statement posted to social media. They did not say when or where he died.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” the family said in the post.
“Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
Brendon played Xander Harris in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” over seven seasons between 1997 and 2003.
The show was centered around Buffy, a teenage girl who battles vampires and other monsters while navigating life in high school.
Brendon’s character was a close friend of Buffy.
The Los Angeles-born actor was also known for his appearances in shows like “Criminal Minds,” “Private Practice” and “Kitchen Confidential,” a TV adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s memoir.
He appeared in several thriller films.
Brendon had previous health struggles. In a 2023 Instagram post, he told fans he had undergone two spinal surgeries and had a heart attack.
In their post Friday, Brendon’s family asked for privacy “as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
