The Linda Mwananchi faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has told off police officers who attempted to disrupt their planned ‘People’s’ National Delegates Convention (NDC) at Ufangamano House, Nairobi.

The leaders, who managed to breach a police barricade and access the venue, became disgruntled after officers attempted to disrupt the planned gathering moments after it had begun.

Amid the standoff, Siaya Governor James Orengo reprimanded the officers, warning them against blocking the gathering.

“If there’s a day we’re willing to die for our country, it’s today. Don’t try anything stupid, usilete upumbavu, tumechoka na nyinyi. Kasongo aende ama asiende. Sisi ni Wantam,” Orengo stated.

Orengo further questioned why police were attempting to prevent what he described as a properly constituted meeting, noting that party delegates were already present.

“This meeting is properly constituted, the SG ni nani? Sifuna yuko ama hayuko? Deputy Party leader Osotsi yuko ama hayuko? Babu Owino yuko ama hayuko?” he posed.

On his part, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said the parallel meeting was convened to expose individuals allegedly seeking to auction the party to President William Ruto.

He questioned the speed at which Dr. Oburu Oginga was installed as party leader following the death of his brother and longterm ODM boss Raila Odinga, in India.

“Huu ndo mkutano tumeandaa ili kuweka wazi kwamba chama chetu ODM kiko hatari sana. Wakora wameingia kwa chama,” he stated.

“Tuliwaambia sisi tunataka kufanya NDC ambayo kila mtu anaenda kwa debe kuchagua viongozi wake. Ilinivunja moyo sana wakati ambayo mlinituma niende nichukue Raila kutoka India, wakora wanakaa mahali, ata Baba hajafika Kenya, tayari wamepanga vile watatachukua nafasi yake.”

He added: “Nikafika Kenya wakasema Oburu ndiyo party leader, nani amesema? Nyinyi mlichagua Oburu? Nani alisema?”

Sifuna added that the ideals of ODM under Raila would not align with those of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), pointing to repeated police interference in their meetings.

“Haiwezekani chama cha ODM isupport mtu ambaye anaweka polisi kuharibu mkutano huu,” he said.

The meeting comes as ODM’s Linda Ground faction holds its own Special Delegates Convention (SDC) at Jamhuri Grounds to ratify decisions made during the National Executive Council (NEC).

A building inspector attached to the Kilifi County government has been arrested over allegations of soliciting a bribe to facilitate construction approvals in Watamu.

The suspect, Sylvia Dhahabu Karisa, who works in the approvals section of Watamu Municipality, was apprehended by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following a complaint from a member of the public.

According to the commission, Karisa allegedly demanded Ksh.435,000 from the complainant to fast-track the issuance of a construction approval.

The complainant reported that county revenue officers had visited his construction site in the Timboni area and issued inflated charges, including Ksh.73,000 for wall construction and Ksh.362,000 for additional structures.

EACC noted that the total amount demanded was deliberately exaggerated for personal gain.

The anti-graft agency launched preliminary investigations after receiving the complaint on March 25, 2026, which confirmed a bribe demand of Ksh.400,000.

This prompted a sting operation a day later, culminating in Karisa’s arrest at the Watamu municipal offices.

She was later escorted to the EACC Upper Coast Regional Office in Malindi for processing before being booked at Malindi Police Station.

The suspect was subsequently released on a cash bail of Ksh.20,000 as investigations continue.

Rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was sworn in as prime minister of Nepal on Friday, tasked with restoring ‌political stability and creating jobs in the poor Himalayan nation long troubled by fragile governments and weak growth prospects.

Shah became prime minister after his three-year-old Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) won 182 seats in the 275-member parliament in the March 5 election, the first vote after the anti-corruption Gen Z protests in which 76 people were killed in September last year.

A former mayor of the capital, Kathmandu, Shah, 35, is Nepal’s youngest prime minister in decades and the first Madhesi – people of the southern plains bordering India – to lead the Himalayan nation that is wedged between Asian giants India and China.

Shah, who was wearing skin-tight trousers, a matching jacket, his signature black Nepali cloth cap and sunglasses, was sworn in at the President House in the presence of diplomats and senior government officials.

“The first test of the new government lies in transparent and prompt delivery of services to people, who expect early signs of good governance from Sunday itself,” political analyst Puranjan Acharya said. Sunday is a ‌working day in Nepal.

Acharya said Shah’s early challenge is to implement the report of a panel that investigated the violence during the anti-corruption protests, a key demand of the families of the victims. The report recommended the prosecution of those responsible for the crackdown, including then Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli.

The youth-led protests were fuelled by a lack of jobs and endemic corruption in the country of 30 million people, where a fifth of the population lives in poverty and an estimated 1,500 people leave the country daily for work abroad.

Political instablity has been a bane, with 32 governments taking office since 1990 and none of them completing a five-year-term.

The Nepali Congress party, the country’s oldest party, became a distant second group in parliament with just 38 seats. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) of Oli, who was forced to resign after the Gen Z unrest, controls 25 members.

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki led the nation through the interim period through to the parliamentary election.

African tech entrepreneurs are set to benefit from a new innovation platform, Nova Garage, set to debut in Nairobi this May during the Africa Forward Summit 2026.

Organised by the French-African Foundation in partnership with Concerto and Nuvision, Nova Garage is being held under the patronage of President  William Ruto.

The initiative will bring together a curated group of emerging startup founders, alongside investors, corporate leaders and policymakers, creating a platform for showcasing African-built solutions and fostering high-level connections.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Foreign Affairs, Dr Korir Sing’Oei, underscored the importance of supporting the continent’s builders.

“We have spent decades speaking for Africa’s future. Perhaps it is time we made room for those who are actually building it.”

At the heart of the programme is a cohort of 15 entrepreneurs under the age of 35, selected from across the continent through a competitive process. These innovators will have the opportunity to present their ventures to an international audience and demonstrate solutions addressing challenges in key sectors including energy, agriculture, mobility and finance.

The platform is designed to provide visibility to startups that have moved beyond the idea stage, with participants expected to showcase functional products or prototypes and clearly defined business models.

In addition to exposure, selected entrepreneurs stand to benefit from direct engagement with investors and industry leaders attending the summit, positioning them for partnerships, scaling opportunities and potential investment.

Hosted in Nairobi, the initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between African innovators and international stakeholders, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

Through its alignment with the Autonomous Advancement Initiative, the platform seeks to support African participation in shaping the future of global technology systems, while fostering cooperation between African countries and partners from abroad.

Beyond the summit, organisers say Nova Garage is intended to evolve into a sustained platform that supports African entrepreneurship through continued networking, visibility and collaboration opportunities.

Applications for the inaugural cohort are open to founders and social entrepreneurs from across Africa, with successful applicants set to pitch their innovations during the Nairobi summit in May.
