Residents of Emitik village in Sogoo Ward, Narok South Constituency, are mourning the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl following claims she suffered fatal injuries after being punished at home.
The deceased, Peris Chepng’eno, was a Grade Seven pupil at Kijapa Primary School.
Witnesses, including the area chief and the girl’s uncle, said the teenager was allegedly beaten by her mother and sister over what were described as household-related mistakes. During the alleged punishment, the girl is reported to have collapsed and lost consciousness.
Police have arrested the two suspects, who are being held at Ololulung’a Police Station pending arraignment in court.
The girl’s body has been taken to Longisa Hospital Mortuary in Bomet County, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause of death.
Local leaders have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue, while also calling for non-violent alternatives when disciplining children.
The incident comes amid growing concern in parts of Narok South over cases in which residents are reported to be taking the law into their own hands while addressing disputes and domestic matters.
