Advocate for the rebirth of luhya unity

Interesting observation from my father, He Nail the head.
I started hearing about Luhyia unity as a young man in 1960’s. By then it was driven by Luhyia enterprenuers and nationalistic leaders. As a result:

  • almost all businesses (shops) in major towns in Kenya were operated by either Wahiindi or Luhyias (Yes…from
Busia all the way to Kitale, Nyeri, Mombasa, Migori)
  • Luhyia had land hunting groups that invited their kith to immigrate join them; thats how we are not so crowded in some places and we are settled everywhere in Kenya, Northern Tanzania and Eastern Uganda
  • Luhyias never let a job vacancy pass without ‘advertising’ to those at ingo to come and take it. I was such a beneficiary
  • anyone who cleared a school level was asked to come and ‘live with me’ in town as you look for a job (I was hosted for 3 months in Nairobi; in return I cannot recount how many from all over western I hosted between 1973 and 1997 in their persuit of education, jobs or travel).
  • as many will bear witness; in 70s, 80s and early 90s, we had so many Luhyia societies thriving in towns and city, with diverse members from all Luhyia fraternity and with thriving economic and social activities
  • Sometimes in l980s “Luhyia unity” (was hijacked?) became a politicians’ Luhyia leaders’ mirage affair and nationalism was sacrificed at the alter of “searching for Luhyia leader and/or Luhyia Spokesperson?”
  • sadly now we hear of it in public barasas when, where it suits them and other parties.
