Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty

Psalm 91 says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…”

The enemy rages war against us. He does so with a few weapons and those weapons consist of fear, which leads to doubt, which could lead to unbelief. So he’s always trying to come after us because if he can get us full of fear, then it cancels out our faith.

Faith comes from a Greek word that literally means “total trust”. It doesn’t mean that we don’t have to face facts and that we’re not looking at situations and saying, yes, this is very real, but it is not greater than God, it is not greater than God’s word. And God is not caught off guard. He has given you a kingdom of power, one that is supernatural. God is certain His Word is sure, it is fail proof. God’s Word has your answer right now- But the enemy wants your faith. Because if he can get your faith, he can weaken your relationship with God.

The Bible says in Hebrews 11, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not yet seen.” If we would break down each word and say, What is the etymology or what is the base of that meaning? It means now, total trust is the foundation, something that supports existence of everything else, foundation of that which God has promised or that which you desire, to be possessed. That’s what the translation means, and proof to remove all doubt. So now total trust in God is the foundation of what is to be possessed and proof to remove all doubt. Why doubt? Doubt means “to waver.” So when you waver— James 1:8 says that a double minded man, one that vacillates, wavers, that man not ought to think he should get anything from God. Because he’s like the seed that he’s tossed about with the waves that are up and down…”, and it says, “If you don’t believe that you cannot receive.”

So the enemy’s job is to get you into that doubt, that wavering position, fear to doubt, that ultimately leads to unbelief. Unbelief is a disposition against God that creates rebellion that basically says, “no God. I love you. I believe you. I have faith.” But, we aren’t walking that out.

Now faith doesn’t remove facts. Faith doesn’t say, “hey, this isn’t real. This is not a crisis.” But let me remind you, that crisis comes from the very word of opportunity. This is an opportunity for the turning of the better or the turning of the worse. And God’s opportunity to you right now, through His Word, I believe is going to stabilize you in faith and break the cycle of fear!

We talked about how the devil wants you in that doubt because it cancels fear and something you can study is James chapter one, verse eight. But if you look back at verse two, Paul says, “Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like the wave of the sea blown and tossed by the wind, and that person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double minded and unstable in all his way.”

Now we know that we find ourselves at different times dealing with anxiety and worry and doubt that there are fluctuations between our faith and our flesh… Remember that John 1 says, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” You cannot separate God from this Word. We also know that “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

God declares that “the just shall live by faith” correct? He also says things like this in Hebrews 11:6, “that without faith, it is impossible to please God.” Now please doesn’t mean “are you happy with me God?” It means to fully agree with God. So God does not separate Himself from the Word and the Word and God do not separate themselves- it is the infallible truth of God, “but the word shall remain forever.” It is perfect, it is flawless. It is true. The Word of God is working on the inside of you, without it, it is impossible to fully agree with God. So agreement is a powerful thing and God wants you to come in agreement with His promises. Anyone who comes to him must first believe that He exists, and that He rewards. He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. “Reward” literally means “to pay for hire”. So God says, I’m hiring and I want you to trust Me! Yes, there’s a pandemic. Yes, there’s a problem. Yes, there’s situations. Yes, there’s circumstances. But I am God. And I have your answer…”

Rest in Psalm 91 that says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Remember 1 Timothy 6:12 says, “fight the good fight of faith.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “we walk by faith and not by sight.” So over and over, we’re reminded that we are people of faith. We’re in this world. We’re not of this world, but we’re set to go into the world. And so right now, you have a Man in heaven. His name is Jesus- representing us. He is praying for us. Everything is calm, heaven is not freaking out. Everything is okay. In fact, the Bible says, “Jesus is our high priests, Hebrews 7:25, “who ever lived to make intercession for us”, and He sits down at the right hand side of the Father. I am going to help work with your faith, help encourage your spirit, help bring peace to your heart, your soul, your mind so that you know God has you. It doesn’t mean that nothing in the world is ever going to happen to you. I’m saying that God’s sovereignty surpasses anything that you see in the natural.
