President William Ruto has arrived in the Maasai Mara ahead of the beginning of the wildebeest migration phenomenon that is among the seven wonders of the world.
Speaking during the viewing ceremony organized along the Mara River on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Ruto observed that the wildebeest migration is a story of resilience among the Kenyan people.
“We are gathered here in the Maasai Mara, a place where the world thrives and land breathes, and nature puts on her best performance. This is the theatre of the great wildebeest migration- one of the world’s most awe-inspiring and mesmerizing natural wonders. One that has earned its place among the new seven wonders of the world,” Ruto said.
Resilience of wildlife
“Every year, millions of wildebeests cross vast, unforgiving terrain in search of something better. They face danger, hunger, and uncertainty, but they press on. In their journey, we see the story of Kenya. Like them, we have often faced adversity, but we keep moving, we adapt, we rise, we up the game and push forward together.”
Narok County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu also revealed that it was the high season for the spectacle that attracts millions of tourists from across the world.
“It is a high season when the wildebeests are coming from Tanzania to Kenya. Last week, we were recognized in the World Book of Records that Maasai Mara is one of those unique places in the world,” Ntutu said.

On her part, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Rebecca Miano observed that the great wildebeest migration was not only a natural phenomenon but a demonstration of how magical Kenya is.
“This is not just a natural phenomenon but a demonstration of how magical Kenya is and how proud we are as the people of Kenya. It gives me immense pleasure to welcome the world to witness the miracle of life unfold live from Magical Kenya,” Miano said.
World recognition
This comes just days after the World Book of Records, UK, officially certified Maasai Mara National Reserve as the home of the world’s greatest annual terrestrial wildlife migration.
Confirming the fete on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Narok County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu revealed that the renowned tourism destination has been recognized for its iconic wildebeest, zebras, and antelope migration.
“This global accolade not only celebrates the awe-inspiring migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, but also highlights the unparalleled ecological significance of the greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, which harbours over 25 per cent of Kenya’s biodiversity,” Ntutu said.
