Former KNUT Secretary-General and ex-Nominated MP Wilson Sossion.
Former KNUT Secretary-General and ex-Nominated MP Wilson Sossion has called for greater transparency in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), while urging Kenyans to hold Members of Parliament accountable through the constitutional recall process.
Sossion’s remarks come in the wake of recent utterances from a section of politicians claiming the 2027 elections will be rigged in favour of President William Ruto.
The IEBC has since issued warnings against making such claims without evidence, urging leaders to allow the commission to carry out its mandate independently.
Speaking in an interview on local TV station on Monday, July 21, 2025, Sossion criticised what he described as reckless and baseless statements made by some politicians regarding the IEBC’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general election.
He emphasised the need for leaders to foster trust in electoral institutions instead of spreading fear or suspicion for political gain.
“We are building a nation, and I find the reckless statements by leaders regarding the IEBC comical. The president will be re-elected based on merit, and there will be no ghost votes in the 2027 election,” he said.

Call back MPs
Sossion further called for reforms within Parliament, urging citizens to utilise the constitutional provision for recalling MPs who have failed to serve effectively.
He insisted that public participation is vital in ensuring accountability and discouraging political interference in matters of national importance.
“Members of Parliament who have not fulfilled their mandate should be subject to recall. There should be public participation by Kenyans to ensure there is no political interference in any impeachment process,” he asserted.
He also emphasised the importance of civic responsibility, urging citizens to actively engage in ensuring that institutions such as the IEBC are protected from political influence and can function with transparency and integrity.
Sossion, known for his outspoken advocacy during his time at the helm of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, has in recent years remained vocal on issues of governance and democracy. His latest remarks align with growing calls from civil society for electoral reforms and the strengthening of oversight mechanisms ahead of the next election cycle.
As the 2027 race gradually takes shape, Sossion reminded of the role both leaders and citizens must play in safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring credible, peaceful elections.
