Former Chief Justice David Maraga has firmly defended his use of contribution websites as a transparent and ethical method of campaign fundraising, as he gears up for a bold 2027 presidential bid.

With a fast-growing online support base and a message of clean governance, Maraga appears to be tapping into growing public dissatisfaction. As he solidifies his 2027 ambitions, the former CJ is not just offering himself as a candidate he’s framing himself as a movement for national renewal.

In an exclusive interview with K24 TV on Monday, July 21, 2025, Maraga declared his intent to stand firm for the Kenyans and rejected the notion that leadership should be bought with stolen public funds.

“We have set up a website, and within two days, Kenyans had contributed more than 500,000 shillings. Those in the diaspora have put in dollars. That tells you that Kenyans want change,” Maraga said.

His remarks come amid mounting scrutiny over campaign financing as the 2027 race begins to take shape. Maraga, known for his unwavering judicial integrity, is positioning himself as the clean alternative to Kenya’s entrenched political elite.

“I will stand firm for the Kenyans. I will work for the Kenyans so that the Kenyans can have their aspirations. I’m appealing to Kenyans to support me because I’m just coming to serve you. If we go on to another term, this country will go to the dogs,” he asserted.

The former CJ didn’t hold back in criticising the current administration, accusing it of economic mismanagement and compounding Kenya’s public debt crisis.

“Public debt has gone haywire since 2013. It has risen to unimaginable levels that unless we take care, Kenya is going to default, and if so, we will see what we have never seen,” he warned.

He framed his 2027 run as a rescue mission for a country on the edge, calling for urgent action to revive the economy and end what he called a cycle of exploitation.

“Money that you are being given is money that has been stolen from you,” he said. You are being bribed to vote for them as you continue suffering with no medicines in hospitals, no funding for schools,” he said.

Maraga promised that his campaign manifesto, set to be released in the coming months, would offer concrete solutions and a roadmap for economic revival.

“When we come with our manifesto fully, you will see the kind of activities that we want to engage in so that we can revamp our economy,” he noted.

Though traditionally viewed as an outsider in the rough-and-tumble world of Kenyan politics, Maraga made it clear he is ready to align with like-minded leaders who share his values.

“Any of the leaders who have come up and are willing to face and deal with corruption squarely, to revamp the economy, to treat the people of Kenya as human beings and the people who have a right to live in Kenya, and end the killings, I can work with,” he said.
