Engage your child’s talent early.

The Ijaw tribe in the Southern part of Nigeria has a culture of training their children how to swim very early. Before age 1, they will make sure the child is bathed in the river and some other rituals are performed. This is why you hardly see any child that grows up in the riverine community that can’t swim. The same way, if a child’s talent is discovered and engaged early, that child will be successful in no time.

Here are some of the ways to engage your child’s talent early:

1. IDENTIFY THEIR INTERESTS: Knowing a child’s talent begins with knowing what interests them. To do this, parents should expose them to different areas of life; arts, music, sports and other activities. When this is done, pay attention to what interests the child more.

Do not limit your children to what you want them to be, allow them to follow their talents.

2. SET GOALS AND TRACK PROGRESS: Having known their talent, engage them by setting goals and tracking their progress.

3. PRAISE EFFORT, NOT ABILITY.  Praise every little effort they make to engage their talents. It may not be what you want or expected but encourage them so that they can be zealous to put in more effort.

4. CONSISTENT PRACTICE : Let them keep practising to master their talents and become better.

5. PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT: Make provisions for professional coaching and development of your child’s talent.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs  22:6

ACTION: I will help my child develop his/her talent early.
